In teaching learning process, learning is an effort in changing the
behaviour. Meanwhile, it is as psychological activities which take place
in active interaction with its environment and produce the attitude
change in comprehensions, knowledges, skills, values and attitudes.
Through this strategy which almost focuses uniquely on polite language
in the study of verbal interaction, the teacher should recognize the
students’ desire to be respected because she should emphasize attitudes
and values for students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, the teaching
learning can give the change for the students’ behaviour concern in a
line with the aim of teaching learning process. Based on the reality
above, I interest to conduct a research entitled, “The Implementation of
Teachers’ Politeness Strategy to Improve the Students’ Reading
Comprehension at the Sixth Grade of MDT Intisyarul Khairiyah Ceguk
Tlanakan Pamekasan.”
From the background above, the researcher formulates two
research problems as follows; (1) How the implementation of teachers’
politeness strategy in teaching learning process of reading
comprehension at the sixth grade of MDT Intisyarul Khairiyah Ceguk
Tlanakan Pamekasan? (2) How does the teachers’ politeness strategy
improve the students’ reading comprehension at the Sixth Grade of
MDT Intisyarul Khairiyah Ceguk Tlanakan Pamekasan?. Based on two
research problems stated above, the research objectives: (1) Describing
the implementation of teachers’ politeness strategy in teaching learning
process of reading comprehension at the sixth grade of MDT Intisyarul
Khairiyah Ceguk Tlanakan Pamekasan. (2) Improving the students’
reading comprehension using teachers’ politeness strategy at the Sixth
Grade of MDT Intisyarul Khairiyah Ceguk Tlanakan Pamekasan.”
In this research, the researcher applies Classroom Action
Research (CAR) to conduct a research at MDT Intisyarul Khairiyah to
improve the students’ reading comprehension by implementing
teachers’ politeness strategy. The procedure of Classroom Action
Research (CAR) used cyclical model based on Kemmis and McTaggart
which involves repeated cycles, each of them consist of planning,
acting, observing, and reflecting. The result of one cycle is used to
determine the need for the following cycle, until the problems get
solved by the strategy. The data sources can be collected from 14
students which belong to 8 males and 6 females, English teacher and
collaborator/observer of MDT Intisyarul Khairiyah Ceguk Tlanakan
Pamekasan. The researcher used several instruments such as tests,
observation, and documentations (students’ worksheet, pictures, field
notes, and observation sheets).
The result of this research shows that the implementation of
teachers’ politeness strategy to improve the students’ reading
comprehension was implemented in one cycle which was carried out in
two meetings. For each meeting has limited during 80 minutes. The
students who had studied reading comprehension by implementing this
5
strategy had any improvements. The improvements were not only on
hard skill, but also on soft skill. For hard skill improvements, they were
proved by getting students’ academic achievements which indicated by
the persentages and the averages of students’ scores in each meetings
where 57% with 60 points of average score (1st meeting) and 100% with
83 points (2nd meeting). Therefore, students have achieved the target of
minimum standard more than the criteria of success, which decided
70%. For soft skill improvements, they were proved by a changing of
their personal, either in students’ motivations in learning or classroom
atmospheres. From this case, the researcher stated that it was an
effective strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension at the
sixth grade of MDT Intisyarul Khairiyah Ceguk Tlanakan Pamekasan.
Based on the result above, the researcher suggests to all people
especially English teachers who will teach and educate students’
reading comprehension in any kinds of educational institutions to use
this strategy in repairing and solving the classroom problems in order to
give any improvements in the achievements of teaching learning
process.
