Key words: Correlation, Speed Reading, Reading Comprehension
Students are forced to read a different kind of passage to fulfill their task,
but sometime they find difficulties in reading such as do not understand about
meaning, finding general idea, finding main idea, and translate every single word.
This situation also happened in SMPN 5 Pamekasan. Beside, speed reading
through skimming can help them to find the general idea of the text, and through
scanning can help them to find the information they needed.
Based on that reason, the researcher feels interested to conduct a research.
Two problems in this research are is there any correlation between Speed Reading
andstudents’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Pamekasan
and how significance the correlation of Speed Reading and students’ reading
comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Pamekasan. While the objectives
of study of this research are to know the correlationbetween Speed Reading
andstudents’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Pamekasan
and to measure the significance correlation of Speed Reading and students’
reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 5 Pamekasan. In this
research, the researcher uses alternative hypothesis that stated there is correlation
betweenSpeed Reading andstudents’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of
SMPN 5 Pamekasan.
The research uses correlational design, which is going to correlate speed
reading as X (independent) variable and students’ reading comprehension as Y
(dependent) variable. The population of this research is the eight grade of SMPN
5 Pamekasan and the total number of population is 246 students. The researcher
took sample by using simple random sampling because the researcher chooses
two classes randomly with the same graduation and the same ability. Furthermore,
the researcher chooses A class consist 31 students and C class consist 31
studentswith the total number of sample 62 students.
Questionnaire and test are the research instrument. Then, the data obtained
will be analyzed by using product moment formula. After analyzing the data, the
result showed the null hypothesis is rejected. It means that the alternatative
hypothesis is accepted. It canbe proven by the result of r value is higher than rtable in significant level 95% which is 0.254 (0,282>0.254).
The result of this research is important for the teacher to help the students
in improving speed reading. And for students, it is suggested to train themselves
and read often, so they canimprove their reading speed and comprehension. For
future researcher, The result of this research is able to be used as refrences if they
want to conduct the research next time.
