AN ANALYZE OF TYPES AND FUNCTIONS OF SETTING ON PERCY JACKSON & OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTENING THIEF NOVEL

Literature is writings valued as works of art, especially novels,
plays, and poems. It is used to describe written or spoken material. is an
extended work of written, narrative prose fiction, usually in story form.
The writer of novel is novelist.The English word “novel” drives from
the Italian word novella, meaning “a tale, a piece of news”. Setting is
talking about the place or time that the story occour.Setting refers
to the point in the time and space at which the events of the plot
occur. We can know the setting of the story by knowing the plot
first.
The researcher interested to observe about the types and
functions of setting on Percy Jackson & Olympians: the Lightening
Thief Novel.
There are two research focuses in this study. The first is what is the
types of setting on Percy Jackson & Olympians: the Lightening Thief
Novel. The second is what is the functions of setting on Percy Jackson
& Olympians: the Lightening Thief Novel.
This study applies qualitative, expressive and objective approach,
because those approach suitable with this study. This research uses
library research to describe the result of research about the types and
functions of setting on Percy Jackson & Olympians: the Lightening
Thief Novel. The subject of the research is novel. While the object of
the research is the types and functions of setting on Percy Jackson &
Olympians: the Lightening Thief Novel.The data are gotten from
reading and understanding the novel about the types and functions of
setting on Percy Jackson & Olympians: the Lightening Thief Novel.
The result of this study show that there are two types of setting on
Percy Jackson & Olympians: the Lightening Thief Novel. Those are
neutral setting and spiritual setting. The first is neutral setting. Its found
in the beginning up to falling of the story. The place are Yancy
Academy, Aunty Em’s Gnarioum and Lotus Casino. The second is
spiritual setting. Its found in the beginning up to resolution of the story.
The place are Camp half blood, Ellysum, Asphadol field and Olympus.
There are four function of setting that occour on Percy Jackson &
Olympians: the Lightening Thief Novel. The first is setting as
metaphore, setting as atmosphere, time as the dominant element and the
last is place as the dominant element.
Based on these result, it is suggested for the next researcher to
conduct the similar research in better finding and give new information
or new study related with literature
