The Use of English Subtitles on Movie Toward Students’ Listening Skill

Listening is the first skill that human has mastered. There are a
lot of ways to do listening in the classroom; watching movie becomes
one of them. Movie becomes media which covers the process of
listening. When movie is played, students are not only listening to the
conversation but also see the screen presented. In the movie itself
presents not only the sequence pictures in the form of video but also
the appearance of subtitles becoming additional elements that support
the whole media in order to enhance listening skill by watching
movie.
What can be a phenomenal is that the use of subtitles on the
movie. Mostly, students use Indonesian subtitle when they are
watching English movie. This does not have any impacts to students’
English listening skill. What if the presence of Indonesian subtitles is
replaced by English subtitles? As it is conducted to prove dual-coding
theory, when picture are added to the meaning, it will increase the
number of signals connected with the message increases. This theory
leads the whole of this research to know how the use of English
subtitles on movie lovers, the students, on their listening skill.
To focus on the case elaborated, researcher used qualitative
approach. The researcher used descriptive qualitative kind of research
as it was considered become the most appropriate kind of research to
explain and describe particular condition found on the research. In
sample, she used purposeful sampling concerning on the study, while
B-class for Listening 2 was selected as data source.
As the researcher used purposeful sampling, of 36 students of
B-class, 18 students were selected randomly to be interviewed. The
research result then showed that the 14 students corrected what they
had heard from headphones and matched them with the subtitle shown
while watching the movie, and 2 students only listen to the
conversations or movie talks while ignoring the presence of subtitles;
meanwhile 2 others only focused on the presence of English subtitles.
These three ways were the ways of the use of English subtitles on Bclass. To sum up, researcher also found that there were advantages
and disadvantages.
Referring to the research result, the researcher suggests all
lectures that to teach and have learning processes are not merely using
classic method. This research has proved that entertaining activity
such as watching movie may also become a way to enhance students’
listening skill with certain condition
