THE STUDY OF ADDRESS TERM CHOICES AMONG THE STUDENTS OF STATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1 GALIS PAMEKASAN

The address term is the word or phrase that use when calling or greeting
someone usually used when want to open or begin communication. The address
term that we use always different when we call or great someone that older or
younger than us. So, the address term choices are very important to differences
people that we called.
The research investigated choices of term of address used by students of
state senior high school 1 Galis –Pamekasan. In this research the researcher
conduct based on interpersonal relationship according to brown in six category of
term of address, are: (a) unequal intimate dyads: self super ordinate; (b) unequal
intimate dyads: self subordinate; (c) unequal non-intimate dyads: self super
ordinate; (d) unequal Non-intimate dyads: self subordinate; (e) equal intimate
dyads; (f) equal non-intimate dyads.
There are two research focuses in this study that become the main study of
this research. The first one is the address term choices among the students of State
Senior High School 1 Galis - Pamekasan. The second is the factor of address term
choices among the students of State Senior High School 1 Galis - Pamekasan.
Accordingly, there are two research purposes they are, to know the address term
choices among the students of State Senior High School 1 Galis - Pamekasan and
to describes the factor of address term choices among the students of State Senior
High School 1 Galis - Pamekasan.
The researcher uses qualitative approach in research design and kind of
research of this study is descriptive research. Since the researcher wants to know
and informs the readers that actually the the address term choices and describe
factors of the address term choices among the students of State Senior High

School 1 Galis - Pamekasan. The research instruments that the research used are:
observation, interview, and documentation. Observation is used to observe the
address term choices among the students in their communication. Interview is
used to get information from the students about the address term choices.
Documentation is used of this study after the researcher gets the data from
interview and observation.
The result of this research, the researcher found four category of term of
address. They are: a) Unequal non-intimate: self super ordinate, subordinate to the
super ordinate. This category use by title, are “mas”or “mbak”. b) Unequal nonintimate: self-subordinate, super ordinate to the subordinate, used by “alek”or
“adik”. c) Equal and intimate dyad In this category there two address term choices
by students, it is by Nickname or kinship term, they are: crot, boy, neng, peyol,
tok, bro, nyo, mo. FN/LN, such as Ina (Siti aminah), Isa (Siti aisyah ), didik
(didiriadi). c) Equal – Non-intimate dyad. In this category use by title (mbak),
FN/LN, kinship term (Cewek and Counk). The factors that influence of address
term choices are age, gender, solidarity and social distance/status. Based on the
result above, it is suggested for all of students to understand about the address
term choices. When choosing and using a term to address another person, the
addressee’s intention is not only to establish good communication but also to
initiate and show some types of relations with the listener. The researcher hopes
that this thesis can contribute something to be knowledge about address term
choices, especially to people who are interested in the usage of address term
choices.
