THE ANALYSIS OF PUNCTUATION ERRORS ON ENGLISH WRITING DIARY AT THE TENTH GRADE OF SMA NEGERI 1 PADEMAWU

Punctuation is an important component in writing that has to be payed
attention in writing, because it determines toward extend to which the writing can
give meaning clearly to the readers. Most of students do not pay attention to the
punctuation use. Because of the importance of the punctuation use in writing, the
activities that regarded as a progress activity to increase the writing skill. It is
done by the teacher of students at The Tenth Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Pademawu.
Based on the description, the focus of this study is what the types of
punctuation errors on English writing diary, and what the causes of students make
punctuation errosr on English writing diary are done by the students at The Tenth
Grade of SMA Negeri 1 Pademawu and also how does the teacher reduce the
problems.
This research uses qualitative approach which is designed descriptively by
using content analysis. The subject of this research is the types of punctuation
errors on English writing diary, while the object is the students at the tenth grade
of SMA Negeri 1 Pademawu. The data collection procedures are obtained through
observation, documentation, and interview. Observation is to observe the whole
text of the English diary, documentation is the students’ assignment diary, and
interview is used to answer the third question of research focuses. The researcher
interview of this research is the English teacher and students of tenth grade. While
checking the validity data is done by using triangulation base on the data sources.
Finally, the three flow models by Miles and Huberman are conducted to analyze
the data.
The result of this research showed many punctuation errors on English
writing diary wrote the students of tenth grade. Most of students write diary which
most of punctuation errors such as period, comma, question mark, exclamation
mark, capitalization and ellipsis, the causes of students make the punctuation
errors is the students careless or lack consentration and the students lack
understand or comprehend. The teacher of the tenth grade reduce the problems by
correcting the diary together, and explains return.
The conclusion is there are some punctuation errors on the English writing
diary by the students of tenth grade that must be corrected and explains return by
the teacher of tenth grade and give solution to reduces the problems. It is
suggested to all element that bring the educational system to train the students in
writing subject in order to increase the writing skills.
