Students’ Responses to the English Lecturers who Teach
by Bilingual at Sixth Semester of TBI Department in Stain Pamekasan, Thesis,

Learning English for Indonesian students especially in STAIN Pamekasan
in which English as foreign language has their own difficulties that cause the
students do not obtain a significant progress. It can be caused by several factors,
such as the strategy is not suitable with students’ condition, the circumtance does
not support it, individual learner differences or even the lecturer that is considered
as not has appropriate treatment to make the students catch the goal of learning.
Facing the individual learner differences, the lecturer must choose proper strategy
to cover all students’ understanding. The fact that commonly occurs in teaching
learning process, mostly the students feel confused when they are instructed by
emphasizing on full English, they are eager to be instructed by bilingual in order
that they can understand the material. When the lecturer emphasizes on full
English the students just trying to understand a part of meaning from the
explanation given by lecturer because the language which is used by lecturer
sometime is not familiar for students. This condition happens because the students
in STAIN Pamekasan have different knowledge background. On the other hand,
the students with a good basic skill of English they do not like when the lecturers
use bilingual, because they think that it will be professianal as English department
student. Thus, the students have different reaction about the lecturer’s language in
teaching learning process in which it will determine whether the students
understand the explanation or not.
This phenomenon causes the researcher interested to conduct an
educational research which is aimed to know what are the responses from students
of TBI department to their English lecturers who teach by bilingual, how the
students deliver the responses to the lecturers who teach by bilingual, and what
are the strenghts and weaknesses of bilingual technique on students performance
whether it is partial or full of bilingual because ideally the students of English
department must be taught by full English.
This research uses Qualitative Approach designed by Descriptive
Research Design. Interview and observation are choosen to be a main instrument,
and documentation as a supporting instrument.
Based on the result of interview, observation and documentation the
researcher found that a great deal of responses appeared from students when they
are instructed by using bilingual. The responses are students understand more,
very happy, very good, excited, often ask question, and sometime give comment,
give response and feedback, interesting, attractive, easier to understand the lesson,
can receive the information from the lecturer, enjoy the class, relax so much, very
enthusiastic, it is OK, easier to catch the material, perfect choice, very effective
and surprised.5
In order that the lecturer is able to cover all students learrner differences
and students with differences knowledge background, it is better for lecturer to
emphasize on the target language in teaching learning process because college
students are advance level although it is allowed to use first language or bilingual
but only a little. The first language or bilingual can be used when the students
seem that they do not understand about the lecturer’s explanation. In this case, for
the first, the lecturer may use a synonym of the words of target language, but
when the students still do not understand the lecturer may use translation but it is
very little in certain words that the students do not understand.
