THE USE OF ENGLISH GROUP DISCUSSION METHOD IN LEARNING GRAMMAR MATERIALS OF RACHELL TAHER’S LEARN ENGLISH NOW TAKEN FROM FACEBOOK IN SAMPANG

Social networking is a service of a range of internet software system that
allows users to interact and share data with other users on a large scale. Social
networking sites on the internet many types and shapes, but the most well known
and much loved teens today are Facebook, Friendster, My Space and Twitter.
Then, if the social networking sites benefit or bring new problems in life. As we
know that how many ways we can learn our language in this world, but we need
to know the function how we can learn our English well. Halliday explains
language as developing according to the changing needs of human communities.
The two main functions that language performs are what Halliday calls the
“ideational function”, which allows people to deal with the external world, and
“the interpersonal function”, which allows people to deal with each other. Lately
students have more techniques in learning lenguage in social media especially on
Facebook in learning English. Position English in Indonesia is a foreign language
that can be used as a language of instruction in the educational unit. And a foreign
language can be used as a language of instruction in the educational unit specified
to support foreign language learners.
This study is a descriptive research using a qualitative approach where
monument of Sampang is as the research setting whose the members of Rachell
Taher’s Learn English Now in Sampang as the subjects. They have made a group
discussion that learned by social media or Facebook. The researcher used
unstructured and open interview because the respondents are free to answer the
researcher’s questions written in the interview guideline.
In this group discussion also the applicative their skill good in grammar or
others so in the use of group discussion method is so effective and it makes the
student to become active students after they join to the group well from the social
and the environment.The explanation above as result research about the use of
group discussion method, furthermore are about the advantages and
disadvantages.
For the advantages of discussion method are by combining each member’s
answer, the decisions could be better, members of the group discussions are often
motivated by the presence of other group members, discussion groups can
improve understanding of self and understanding towards others (improving the
ability of individuals to interact), Students quickly response in responding the
lessons., Students quickly understand the lesson, improve official attitude in
handling errors on lessons, students critic and respond their friend who have
mistakes in answering or stating, answering and giving opinion, students can
improve their confidence, students can learn how to solve the problem.
For the disadvantages of discussion method are discussion group requires
more time than the usual way of learning, can be a waste of time, especially if
there are negative things, such as poor alignment, talks were protracted,
irregularities were not reprimanded, the appearance is not good, members are shy
or quiet often do not get a chance to express their opinions, as a result he

withdraws or frustrated, if the leader of the group undiplomatic discussion will be
dominated by certain people.
The result showed the use of group discussion method in learning
grammar to English students in facebook on Rachell Taher’s Learn English Now
in Sampang is the effective method for students to become active students and
well for social and the environment. And in this case also have benefits are the
advantages and disadvantages that influenced in using group discussion method.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for the English teacher to active
in using this method for the students in teaching grammar in order to students’
interest to study and practice with their friend every day. It is suggested for the
students to focus and be serious in learning English especially in group discussion
method and obey, listen, and pay dose attention to their teachers in the classroom
to get the understanding of the subject. It is suggested for further researcher could
use this story as a theory of their research, especially about group discussion
method and the grammar exercise.
