TEACHING WRITING SKILL BY USING GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 1PADEMAWU

There are four language skills in English. Writing one of them. In teaching
writing, it is significanct for a teacher look for a teaching methods which is
appropriate with the students’ situation and condition. For exempele if the
students number in the class is big enough, the students vocabularies mastery are
not good, one of the suitable method that can be used the Grammar Translation
Method.
There are three research focuses of this research. the first, How does the
teacher implemnt of Teaching Writing Skill by Using Grammar Translation
Method of the Eighth Grade Students at SMP Negeri 1 Pademawu. The second,
what are the strengths of applying grammar translation method in teaching writing
skill of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Pademawu. The third, what are
the weaknesses of applying grammar translation method in teaching writing skill
of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Pademawu.
In this research used qualitative research. it is descriptive research. To
collect the data the researcher uses some collecting data procedures. Those are
interview, observation and documentation. The data analysis used by researcher
are data reduction, data display and conclusion and verification. To check the
validity of data the researcher used triangulation technique.
The result of this research showed when the teacher implements grammar
translation method in teaching writing skill, the students interested and enjoyed in
the teaching learning process. the teacher asked the students to make a text related
with the material and try to discuss it with their groups. in this case, the students
increase their writing skill by using mix language. The strenghts are The teacher
could know the form comprehending of the students quickly only by correcting
the students’ assignment of making translation and writing their past experience.
The teacher ordered the students practicing translation. The teacher could handle
the big class well because she applied Grammar Translation Method. Moreover
she mixed it with working group-discussion, so all the students still be active in
the class room. The weaknesses are the teacher got difficulties to translate several
words when the students asked her, the aspect was learnt only in translation. The
students did not think directly in English because of translation way. the teacher
only realized the function of language only as a part of the human information.
From the statement above the researcher conclude that used this method
helped the students practice translation of paragraph. The researcher suggested to
the teacher must improved the students writing skill by using grammar translation method. It made classroom more interesting and the students more active in the
class.
