ANALYSIS ON STUDENTS’ MOTHER TONGUE INTERFERENCE IN THEIR ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS AT SMPI NURUT TAUFIQ TLANAKAN PAMEKASAN

Speaking is one of important thing to everyone who studies English as their foreign language. It is not only become as important target in any language, but also in pronunciation because speaking without a good pronunciation so that it will give misunderstanding between the hearer and the speaker. In speaking English students also have problems, one of the problem that faced by students is about pronunciation. Most of them cannot or failed in pronouncing the English words in correct sound in speaking or reading because they concerned interference or still influenced by their mother tongue that is Madurese language.
For the reason above, the researcher interested in analyzing the research focus, the first is “How does Students’ Mother Tongue Interference in Their English Pronunciation of Eighth Grade Students at SMPI Nurut Taufiq Tlanakan Pamekasan? And the second one is what are the factors influences of Students’ Mother Tongue Interference in Their English Pronunciation of Eighth Grade Students at SMPI Nurut Taufiq Tlanakan Pamekasan?
In this research, the researcher uses qualitative approach with descriptive research. In collecting the data, the researcher uses some techniques such as observation, interview, documentation and audiovisual. The observation conducted on January 2017, interview done by the researcher to the teacher and the students. While, the documentation and audiovisual collected such as picture and recording of students’ voice in speaking or reading English vocabularies.
The result of this research shown that interference occurs to the students in pronouncing the English words, most of them cannot and failed in pronouncing the English words in correct sound. The students always use the Madurese intonation or Madurese accent when they are speaking that is often pressed it. Also, they always make addition of vowels sound to final consonant and pressed in the first or in the last word like when they pronounce the Madurese language as their first language. The interference occurs to the students because they have habitual in using their mother tongue in communicating with other people in order to make them always make error in pronouncing it, other factors of interference of the students because they concern lack of knowledge of pronunciation in order to make them don’t know how to pronounce the English words in correct sound.
