Motivation is one of factors which is frequently connected to someone’s achievement, because the motivation itself is as the propulsion within him which have roles actively in making someone enthusiasm to learning a lesson. Here motivation is divided into two kinds; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation is energy emerging because of an interest in a lesson itself, while extrinsic motivation is emerged because of the purpose besides in the lesson. One of a lesson in English that is grammar is important to master because it has benefit to guide someone how to arrange the correct sentence of English.
Based on that case the researcher feels interested in conducting a research about the correlation among students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivation with their grammar achievement in SMAN 1 Galis pamekasan. The purpose is to know whether the students’ intrinsic and extrinsic motivations have closely or significantly correlation with grammar achievement of the students at the school.
This research is using the quantitative approach with a research design called correlational design, that is multiple correlation which correlate three variables, where the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations is as the independent variables, while the grammar achievement is as the dependent variable. The research data of this research is by using the instrument of questionnaire and test, with the sample which consists of 65 students and it is taken from each department of Natural and Social Science Department. The given questionnaires are to check the students’ both motivations toward the English grammar. Then the test is made to measure students’ grammar knowledge. And the data obtained through the instruments will be analyzed by using the formula of multiple correlation.
The research result which is found by the researcher shows that between intrinsic and intrinsic motivations do not have the significant correlation toward the grammar achievement of students of SMAN 1 Galis Pamekasan. This statement is based on the statistical analysis where the index of F-value which is obtained as 1.04 is lower that the F-table either in the significance level of 5% by the value as 3.15 or of 1% by the value as 4.98.
Thus, based on the analysis result above the researcher suggests to the English teacher that they in this case should also pay attention to the other things which relate and support to the English grammar besides motivation itself, so that the students are able to achieve the greater achievement. However, it does not mean that motivation has no importance and influence to the learning, even it does. The only motivation is not enough, because the other factors besides motivation are also important.
