Learning is the process of gaining more knowledge, or of learning how to do something. One of way to obtain the knowledge is by reading. In reading, the reader needs to catch the meaning of the text in order to understand the information in the text and finally obtain the knowledge. Still, learners’ ability to comprehend the text is difference each other. This difference is called as Learning Style. Bobbi DePorter and friends categorize the learning style into visual, auditory and kinesthetic style. An individual's ability to comprehend text is influenced by their traits and skills, one of which is the ability to make inferences. Besides, Carbo stated that good readers prefer to learn through their visual and auditory senses, while poor readers have a stronger preference for tactile and kinestheticlearning.
There are two research problems in this study. The first one is whether visual learners have better reading comprehension than kinesthetic learners at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan. The second is whether there is any statistically significant difference between visual and kinesthetic learners at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan in reading comprehension.
The research is to compare reading comprehension between visual and kinesthetic learners at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan and to analyze statistically significant difference between visual and kinesthetic learners at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan in reading comprehension. There are two variables in this study; visual learners and kinesthetic learners as independent variable and reading comprehension as dependent variable. The previous research study about correlation between learning style to nursery practicum and this research will study by comparing visual and kinesthetic learning to reading comprehension.
This study used quantitative approach with causal comparative design. The population was all the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan, namely 320 students. The sample was48 students 0r 15% of population; while just 27 students, 17 Visual learners and 10 kinesthetic learners, had been studied. Research instruments which were used in this research were questionnaire, test and documentation. Questionnaire was used to divide students based on their style. Test was used to measure students reading comprehension. There were 3 texts with 20 questions. Documentation was used to collect, to complete, and to support data whether the data in the research was valid or not. The obtained data was analyzed by using independent t-test since it was to compare two groups.
The result showed that the achievement of reading comprehension of visual students was same as kinesthetic learners at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan and there was no statistically difference between visual and kinesthetic students at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Pamekasan. It was proven that obtained t-value was lower than t-table in significant 5% and 1% (1.084 < 2.06 and 1.084 < 2.79).
Based on the result above, it is suggested for reader to determine what style they have. For Students need to recognize their learning style. So that if they are provided with strategy or subject which is not suitable with their learning style, they are able to provide their own strategy to make them easier to understand the lesson. For lecturer/teacher; lecturer/teacher needs to know and understand the diversity of the students. So that, lecturers can accommodates strategy suitable with students’ learning style. Moreover, strategy used by teacher can in line with students’ own strategy in order to get optimal result. For institution; institution need to give opportunity to the teacher or lecturer to learn more and join many trainings dealing with learning style. Furthermore, teacher can provide different and interesting strategy to students without ignorant one of leaning style.
