Grammar is the structural foundation of our ability to express ourselves. By grammar, the sentences will be correct and grammatical. Not all students good at grammar because it consisted of rules, sometimes the students felt difficulty and make students do many errors like in applying the articles in sentences and in written text. The article itself is a word that is placed before noun. Sometimes it known as the indefinite (a,an) and definite (the) article.
This research has two kinds of research focus. First, what are the students’ errors in using the articles on the written text at the seventh grade of MTs Nahdlatun Nasyiin IV Pasanggar Pegantenan. And the second what are the factors influence the students’ errors on the written text at the seventh grade of MTs Nahdlatun Nasyiin IV Pasanggar Pegantenan.
The objective of this research is: First, to know the students’ errors in using the articles on the written text at the seventh grade of MTs Nahdlatun Nasyiin IV Pasanggar Pegantenan. And the second to know the factors influence the students’ errors at the seventh grade of MTs Nahdlatun Nasyiin IV Pasanggar Pegantenan.
This research used qualitative approach and descriptive research method. The qualitative was to describe the data in the form of words. The data was obtained from observation, interview, and documentation of English teacher and students at the seventh grade of English teaching learning process. The data was analyzed by descriptive analysis and checked for validity by triangulation.
The result showed that the students’ knowledge in using the articles was very low, especially when applying it into sentences and into written text. Many students made errors of morphology and errors of omission because they didn’t understand on the use of articles broadly, student’s lack of focusing when explaining the lesson of articles, students didn’t like English language, students never practiced the articles, and also students lack of understanding of the articles.
Based on the result above, it was suggested for the English teachers to more creative in teaching learning and giving the additional material and exercise to practice it. Then it was suggested for students to more spirit and study hard about English grammar. And also the students have to often repeat the materials and practice it at home especially in doing a task into written text.
