The Use of English Song Lyrics as Media in Teaching English Vocabulary, at the Eighth Grade of SMP Maarif 1 Pamekasan

The background of the study in this research are the students still have difficulties in remembering new vocabulary and confused to understand the vocabulary. The teacher still uses conventional methods, the teacher only translates the words and monotonous, so the students are easy to get bored. To improve students’ vocabulary, the teacher can use song lyric as teaching media to help them in teaching learning process.
This research is to find out the effect of The Use of English Song Lyrics in Teaching English Vocabulary at the Eighth Grade of SMP Maarif 1 Pamekasan. The statement of the problem in this study; “Are the students of the eighth grade of SMP Maarif 1 Pamekasan taught by using song lyric having better achievement in vocabulary power than those are not taught by using song lyric?” The objective of the study is “To know whether the students of the eighth grade of SMP Maarif 1 Pamekasan taught by using song lyric have better achievement in vocabulary power than those are not taught by using it in teaching English vocabulary”.
The population of the research was the eighth grade students of SMP Maarif 1 Pamekasan . The research methodology was an experimental research, which conducted in two classes; the experimental group (VIIIth A) and control group (VIIIth B) as sample. The VIIIth A was taught by using song lyrics, while the VIIIth B was taught without song lyrics (using conventional method).
The instrument used to collect the data was test. The test was used to know students’ competence before and after the experiment run. There are two kinds of test. They are pre-test and post test.
The result showed that pre-test total score of the experimental group was 238 and control group was 260. While, the post-test total score of the experimental group was 404 and control group were 270. The obtained t-test was 4.73, whereas the t-table was 2.68 for a ts0,05 and 2.42 for ts0,01. The t-test score was higher than the t-table It was meant that Ha was accepted while Ho was rejected. Since t-test score was higher than the t-table, Song Lyrics were effective media in Teaching English Vocabulary at the eighth grade of SMP Maarif 1 Pamekasan.
Finally the researcher suggests to the teachers that they should use song lyrics as one of media in the teaching English Vocabulary.
