English language in Indonesia is as foreign language and it becomes main lesson in the school. Sometimes, teachers find out difficulties in English teaching learning process. Some materials dealing with English language are difficult for students, one of them is Dictation subject. Dictation at STAIN Pamekasan becomes one of subjects in the fourth semester at English teaching learning program. As a lecturer should be creative to manage classroom well and use teaching learning strategies which can catch students’ attention or students’ interest. If the students feel boring it can less of concentration and it causes the occurring of errors, either in the grammar, comprehension of the text or spelling. In the fourth semester students of English teaching learning program, even they have studied listening and writing skill they still make errors in English Dictation subject especially in spelling errors.
There are three research problems in this study. The first is what do spelling errors occur on English Dictation subject at the fourth semester students of English teaching learning program stain Pamekasan. The second is what are the factors that influence the students’ spelling errors on English Dictation subject at the fourth semester students of English teaching learning program stain Pamekasan. The third is how do the students overcome their spelling errors on English Dictation subject at the fourth semester students of English teaching learning program stain Pamekasan.
The data was collected through interview to the lecturer of English Dictation subject, questionnaire to the students, observation and documentations.
The result of this research showed that the spelling errors occur on English Dictation subject at the fourth semester students of English teaching learning program involves omission, addition, and misordering. Then, the factor that influence the students’ spelling errors are limited English vocabulary, the lecturer’ speed of presentation, the weakness of students’ listening skill, and less concentration in the classroom. While the ways how the students overcome their spelling errors are memorize English vocabulary, Listening English Music, English Movie and English News, Looking up Oxford Dictionary and building up concentration in the classroom.
Based the result above, it is suggested for the English Dictation lecturer to evaluate and to help the students in minimizing their spelling errors in English teaching learning Dictation subject, and to use the teaching learning strategies that appropriate with the teaching learning process of Dictation in order to make the students easy to get the materials. It is suggested for the fourth semester students to increase their English skill by practicing either in writing skill or in listening skill, and the students are suggested to have good preparing in learning English Dictation in order the teaching learning of Dictation subject runs well.
