Content Analysis of English Reading Texts Based on National Character and Cultural Education on Course Book for the Tenth Grade at the State of Senior High School in Pamekasan

Recently, there are many phenomenons that are related to the wrong content of books like in reading text. Whereas, there is regulation from Ministry of Education and Culture that should insert character building the process of education including in English book. From the discrepancy above, it is a reason of researcher that conducted this study to know whether the reading text of course book reflects that values. The course book especially student work sheet used is entitled Kreatif (Kreasi Belajar Siswa Aktif): Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA Kelas Xa and Xb
The problems are limited to analyze what values are existed in reading texts of course book and how reading texts are reflected that values. The objectives are limited to find out the values are existed in reading texts of course book and to describe how reading texts are reflected that values.
The approach and kind of research is descriptive qualitative content analysis. This study is conducted to analysis the content of reading text presented in course books based on the descriptive of each values as the theory. The researcher uses documents and text observation collecting data and shows the finding by table and diagram in order to be interesting. Data analysis starts from preparing data, giving a mark (coding) statement data, then reporting, interpreting data, the last drawing conclusion and suggestion. For checking data validity, the researcher uses source triangulation.
The results of this study are: the researcher finds 94 data from 35 reading texts as total number showing the values. The values are existed sixteen values like Religious, Honest, Tolerance, Discipline, Hard Work, Creative, Independent, Democratic, Curiosity/Feeling to Know, The Spirit of Nationality, Love to Motherland, Rewarding Achievement, Friendly/Communicative, Love to Peace, Social Care, and Responsibility. There are two values that are not existed like Love Reading and Environmental Care. Then, the researcher finds several ways of reading texts to reflect values by using implicit meaning, having position and function in the reading text.
Based on the result, there are suggestions like the English teachers should check/selective before using books in teaching learning process to know the quality of them; the authors of book should pay attention the regulation from Ministry of Education and Culture about that values; and the readers can add their knowledge/know more especially the value of National Character and Cultural Education.
