An Analysis of Educational Values in Totto-Chan: The Little Girl at The Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi based on Paulo Freire’s Perspective

Since elementary school, students was designed to be same each others. It seems that the students led to think the same way each other. All students are considered equal in this kind of education model, though each student has a uniqueness and different potentials. In the novel "Totto Chan: The Little Girl At The Window" the concept of education offered is unique and different. The concept of education in this novel related with educational value according to Paulo Freire.
It made the researcher interested to conduct a study on the educational values in this novel. There are two research focus in this thesis. First is “what are the educational values found in Totto chan: The little girl at the window. Second is “How educational values appear in totto chan:the little girl at the window based on Paulo Freire’s perspective.
The scope of this study is the educational values in Totto chan: The little girl at the window. The researcher limit the study on educational values from Paulo Freire’s perspective.
Researcher used a qualitative approach in this study. The research method used is content analysis. The subject of this research is researcher himself and the novel. There are two kind of data source. First is primary data source that is the novel of Totto Chan: The Little Girl At The Window. Second is secondary data source that is books, literature, official websites and other relevant material. Researcher as the key to collect the data. Then, the novel is the instrument for researcher to search the educational values.
The data of research is collected by doing the following steps: selecting the novel, reading the novel repetitively and carefully, identifying the data related to the study, classifying the data, selecting the relevant data, and reporting selected data.
From the results of the study, researchers found 52 educational values contained in the novel. From the educational values, researchers found 28 educational values based on the perspective of Paulo Freire, that is divided into 6 points: liberating education, pedagogy of the oppressed, dialogic education, the concept of coenscientization, contextual education and critical education.
Based on the research, the researcher would like to give the suggestions. For the teacher, the researcher hope that teachers can implement the positive things that exist in this study at school and also encourage students’ interest in literature. For the other researcher, the researcher suggested to follow the study with different aspects of this research. For the readers, the researcher hope that the readers can apply the educational values that exist in the novel in their everyday life.
