Reading is one of skills in English teaching which is an activity to understand the text intensively or extensively. Both are intensive and extensive reading related to reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is intentional thinking of the content during read the text. Extensive reading is carried out to achieve a general understanding of a text. The students just read the text and then finds the main ideas of the text. One problem that many students who were still difficult to find the main ideas of the text in extensive reading subject.
There are two questioning problems. The first, how the students’ difficulties in finding the main ideas of the text in extensive reading subject at the fourth semester of TBI STAIN Pamekasan. The second, what the factors influence the students’ difficulties in finding the main ideas of the text in extensive reading subject at the fourth semester of TBI STAIN Pamekasan. So, this research conducted to explain the students’ difficulties in finding the main ideas of the text in extensive reading subject at the fourth semester of TBI STAIN Pamekasan. And then to describe the factors influence the students’ difficulties in finding the main ideas of the text in extensive reading subject at the fourth semester of TBI STAIN Pamekasan.
The researcher used qualitative descriptive as a method of research. Qualitative research is an inquiry approach useful for exploring and understanding a central phenomenon. Qualitative research need descriptive data which are collected data in the form of words or picture rather than number. The main data source of this research are the students and the lecturer of extensive reading subject. The researcher collected of the data by using observation, interview, and documentation. In this research, the researcher use non participant observer and done interview with some students in D class of extensive reading subject. To know the validity of data the researcher use triangulation of the source, time, and technique.
The result, the researcher found the students difficulties in finding main ideas of the text such as the students needed so long time to finding it, they were difficult to connect the ideas in every paragraph into one main ideas of the whole text, they were difficult to find the key words of the text, and they were sometimes mistake in finding it. Their main ideas were not concern with the content of text. Those difficulties influenced by limited vocabulary knowledge, less attention in selected the levels of text, did not use approprite technique, did not have the prior knowledge in the subject matter, and students have short term memory.
