The noun phrase is part of phrases in grammatical knowledge that is often
found almost in every sentence. Because it functions as crusial elements of the
sentences such as subject, object and complements. Comprehending noun phrase
is necessary for the students if they want to compose or write descriptive text,
because it is one of elements or language feature in descriptive writing which
determines whether the description is good or not, as far as this, Noun phrase
becomes more complex discussion then other grammatical discussion, due to
comprehend it the students must master of grammatical elements such as the
articles, demonstratives and part of speech especially an adjective and noun so
that causing the students feel difficult to understand even in applying in
descriptive writing form.
Based on the case above, it can be appointed two problems of study those
are: Is there correlation the students’ noun phrase knowledge to descriptive text
writing ability at A class in Banyuanyar English Center Potoan and How
statistically significant is the correlation of students’ noun phrase knowledge to
descriptive text writing ability at A class in Banyuanyar English Center Potoan
Daya Palengaan Pamekasan. The objectives of study in this research are; to know
whether there is correlation the students’ noun phrase to descriptive text writing
ability at A class in Banyuanyar English Center and to find out how statistically
significant the correlation of students’ noun phrase knowledge to descriptive text
writing ability at A class in Banyuanyar English Center Potoan Daya Palengaan
Pamekasan.
The research design of this study is using quantitative approach while the
design of this research is correlational descriptive design with population is
twenty two students of A class in Banyuanyar English center. The researcher uses
test, documentation and observation as the instruments of this research to collect
the data. Then, the result of this research showed that there is correlation of
students’ noun phrase knowledge to descriptive text writing ability at A class in
Banyuanyar English Center Potoan Daya Palengaan pamekasan because the
alternative hypothesis is accepted. It proves that the “rxy” value of this research is
0, 609 is higher than the coefficient value of correlation “r” product moment or ttable
in significant level 5% with degree of freedom 20 that is 0,423. (0,609 >
0,423) in significant level 5%.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for teachers should know the
students’ basic competence before giving noun phrase lesson to students so that
they can understand more easily. It is suggested for students that comprehending
noun phrase is important in order that their descriptive text writing is well. And
for the next researcher the result of this research can be used as references.
