Language is one of the most important things in communication and it is used as a means of communication. As an international language, English is very important and has many interrelationship with various aspects of life owned by human being. Speaking is one of important skill to be developed in English subject. The teacher expected to have anyways to develop it. One of important ways is making the students having speaking habit, one of things that make the students have speaking habit is by using punishment as reinforcement.
Based on that case the researcher feels interested in conducting a research about the correlation of Punishment as Reinforcement to the Students’ Speaking Habit at the Ninth grade of TMI ( Tarbiyatul Mu’allimien Al-Islamiyah) Female Al-Amien Boarding school Prenduan Sumenep Madura. The purpose is to know whether punishment as reinforcement have closely or significantly correlation with students’ speaking habit in there.
This research is using the quantitative approach with a research design called correlational design, that is bivariate correlation which correlate two variables, where the Punishment as reinforcement is as the independent variables, while the students’ speaking habit is as the dependent variable. The research data of this research is by using the instrument of questionnaire and documentation, with the sample which consists of 35 students and it is taken from each class ninth A, B, C, D and E by using simple random sampling, the researcher taken seven sudents from each class. The given questionnaires are to check the Punishment as reinforcement toward the students’ speaking habit. And the data obtained through the instruments will be analyzed by using the formula of pearson product moment.
The research result which is found by the researcher shows that between Punishment as reinforcement have the significant correlation toward the students’ speaking habit at the ninth grade of TMI female Al-amien Prenduan Sumenep. This statement is based on the statistical analysis where the index of F-value which is obtained as 0.810 is higher that the F-table either in the significance level of 5% by the value as 0.325 or of 1% by the value as 0.418.
Based on the analysis result above the researcher suggests to the English teacher that they in this case should always pay attention to the other things which relate and support to the students’ English Speaking habit, so that the students are able to speak english continually. Because here it has been proved that the punishment as reinforcement have the strong enough toward the speaking habit result which is gotten by students of TMI Female Al-amien Prenduan Sumenep, instead the relation is high. However, it mean that Punishment importance to make students interest to speak english and also can make students have speaking habit.
