The Use of Audio-Visual Media in Teaching and Learning Process of Speaking English at the Twelfth Grade Students of MA Al-Ghazali Rombasan Pragaan Sumenep

Speaking is an important language skill that should be mastered in learning language. By mastering speaking, students can use the target language to communicate to other people or even the native orally. But at the fact, speaking is become one of the language skill that difficult to be mastered by the students. Some students feel unconfident in expressing their ideas orally. It is caused by many factors; for example, afraid of making mistakes in pronunciation and choosing the appropriate words, lack of vocabularies and grammar and the other factor is the boredom situation of the speaking class. One way to improve the students speaking ability is by using audio-visual media. Audio-visual media is an audible and visible media that can motivate students to be more concentrate to the explanation of the lesson. Audio-visual media gives specific example and theme which suitable with the students need, in order to make students easier to understand the meaning of the utterances.
There are three research problems in this study that become the main study of this research. The first one is the use audio-visual media in teaching and learning process of speaking English at the Twelfth Grade Students of MA Al-Ghazali Rombasan Pragaan Sumenep. The second one is the advantages got by the teacher in the use of audio-visual media in teaching and learning process of speaking English at the Twelfth Grade Students of MA Al-Ghazali Rombasan Pragaan Sumenep. And the last is the students respond English speaking learning by using audio-visual media at the Twelfth Grade of MA Al-Ghazali Rombasan Pragaan Sumenep.
The researcher uses qualitative approach in research design and kind of research of this study is descriptive research. Researcher uses this approach because this research explains the information about the process of the use of audio-visual media in teaching and learning process of speaking English at the twelfth grade students of MA Al-Ghazali Rombasan Pragaan Sumenep. The research instruments that the research used are: interview, observation, and documentation. Interview is used to get information from the students about the use of audio-visual media in teaching and learning process of speaking English. Observation is used to observe the description of the use of audio-visual media in teaching and learning process of speaking English. Documentation is used in this study after the researcher gets the data from interview and observation.
The result of data analysis are known that in the classroom activity, the English teacher ordered his students to watch the movie or video clip. When the movie or video clip was finished, the teacher always asked the students response about what they had watched. In this watching chance, the English teacher also often asked the students about the new words they got from the audio-visual media show, what words they did not understand and also the teacher drilled them the way to pronounciate the words well. The use of audio-visual media in teaching and learning process of speaking English have some advantages, includes: audio-visual media are helpfull to make the students interested to pay attention to the lesson, making the students to be easier to understand the material, the students’ pretension to talk is increased, motivating the students to do their speaking tasks individually, helping the students to drill their listening skill, vocabulary mastery, and also helping the students to achieve their progression in learning speaking English. Beside the advantages, there are also the disadvantages of audio-visual media. Audio-visual media may make the students bored if the teacher uses it too frequent. Audio-visual media also may make the students do not understand the material if the pronounciation of audio-visual media show are too fast.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for the teacher to create the teaching learning process to be more attractive by using various kinds of visual media in order to help the building up of the student’s imagination in order to increase the students achievement in teaching and learning process of speaking English. In using audio-visual media, the English teacher also must decide the best movie or video clip to be shown to the students in order to make them easier in adapting their selves with the utterances in the audio-visual media show, especially the video clip. The actor or actress in the video clip should not speak too fast in order to make the students easier to catch the main point of the material.
