The Effectiveness of Determining Importance Strategy on Students’ Reading Comprehension at the Ninth Grade of MTsN Sumber Bungur Pamekasan

Reading comprehension is the ability to read text, process it and understand its meaning. An individual's ability to comprehend text is influenced by their traits and skills, one of which is the ability to make inferences. If word recognition is difficult, students use too much of their processing capacity to read individual words, which interferes with their ability to comprehend what is read. There are a number of approaches to improve reading comprehension, including improving one's vocabulary and reading strategies.
The main problem of this research are do the ninth grade students taught reading by using determining importance strategy achieve better on reading comprehension and is there any significant effect of determining importance strategy on students’ reading comprehension achievement at the ninth grade of MTsN Sumber Bungur Pamekasan, because determining importance strategy is one of reading strategy that can help the learner easier to comprehend the text by make notes, and write about what you are learning, etc to get main idea of the text.
In this research, the researcher uses Quantitative research approach exactly Experimental research design, and the population of this research is all of ninth grade students of MTsN Sumber Bungur Pamekasan and also as the sample of this research is English class and Mathematic class. The instruments usedin collecting data are test and documentation. This research was done three months since 17thApril until 14thMay 2014, The technique of data analysis used in statistical analysis exactly “t” test analysis.
The result of this research showed that using Determining Importance Strategy in reading comprehension has significant effect on reading comprehension at the ninth grade of MTsN Sumber Bungur Pamekasan. It is proven from the result of the data analysis and hypotheses test that showed after treatment using determining importance strategy the students’ score is higher than before treatment. The mean value of pre-test is69,189 and post-test is 85,676. The difference is 16,487points. Whereas from the result of “t” test analysis found that the value of “t” test is higher than t table. The value of “t” test is 13,678 while the critical value in df 60 on 1% is 2, 65 on 5% is 2,00.
Based on the result of this research above can be concluded that using determining importance strategy in learning reading comprehension give significant effect on students’ reading comprehension. So, the researcher suggests the teacher to use this strategy in teach English reading comprehension because this strategy is useful for the students to improve their reading comprehension.
