The Correlation Between Students’ Grammar Understanding on Their Reading Comprehension at The Eleventh Grade of MA. Nurul hidayah Robatal

Language is a tool used by people to communicate. One of the ways to communicate is trough written text which must be read. Reading is also provided in the school to the students and of course in reading comprehension needs grammar to give correct meaning or message from the writer.
There are two objectives of study in this research. The first is to know the students having good grammar understanding have a good reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of MA Nurul Hidayah Robatal Sampang. The second is to know the correlation between the students’ grammar understanding and their reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of MA Nurul Hidayah Robatal Sampang.
This research uses quantitative research design where the data is analyzed using statistical procedures. This research is correlation research which involves variable X as independent variable (students’ grammar understanding) and variable Y as dependent variable (students’ reading comprehension). The subject of this research is the students at the eleventh grade of MA Nurul Hidayah Robatal Sampang which consist 28 students. The research instruments are test used to get students’ grammar understanding score (variable X) and documentation used to get students’ reading comprehension score (variable Y). The researcher also gets that the test used has been valid and reliable. Those are proved that the researcher uses content validity and reliability value is higher than r table. The researcher gets the documentation from the English teacher at that school.
The result of this research is that there is enough correlation between variable X (independent variable) and variable Y (dependent variable). It is proved by the result of the correlation value that is 0.558 and it is higher than r table whether in 5% or 1% significance.
Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that there is correlation between students’ grammar understanding and their reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of MA Nurul Hidayah Robatal Sampang. The researcher also proposes some suggestion to some educational elements such as headmaster, teacher, students, and also to the next researchers.
