Increasing Students’ Speaking Skill By Using Snakes And Ladders Board Games At The Third Grades Of SMP Negeri 8 Pamekasan

Mastering the art of speaking is the single most important aspect of learning a second or foreign language. There are some factors which make the students can not increase their speaking skill. The first, many teachers use the method which is not suitable so that it makes the students become unactive and unenjoyable in the classsroom. Also, that method can make the students not accustomed to use English actively and assume that learning English is not interesting. The phenomenon above appear in Junior High School 8 Pamekasan, especially in third E class. Many students can not communicate in English well. They are not brave and shy to speak up. To solve the problem, we have to find and apply the exact method in teaching speaking and increasing the students’ speaking skill. In this case the researcher will conduct the teaching process by using snakes and ladders board games at the third grades of SMP Negeri 8 Pamekasan.
This research aim to describe how can snakes and ladders board games be implemented to increase the students’ speaking skill at the third grades of smp negeri 8 pamekasan?. And the objective of this reasearch is to describe the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of snakes and ladders board games to increase the students’ speaking skill at the third grades of smp negeri 8 pamekasan.
The type of this research is classroom action research. The subject of this research is E Class of Third grades in SMPN 8 Pamekasan in academic year 2013/2014. The research consists of two cycles. There were two meeting in each cycle where the researcher conducted the speaking test in the second meeting of each cycle. In the planning stage the researcher desain lesson plan research instrument, and the criteria of succes. In implementing the action, the researcher conducted the research based on the lesson plan. In observing the action, the researcher collected the data through observation checklist, test, and documentation. In reflecting the action, the researcher achieved the criteria of succes or not.
The result of this research showed that the average of students’ score in the cycle I test was 73 and the average of students’ score in the cycle II test was 82. The achievement of the test in cycle II showed that the treatment was succesful because the criteria of succes of the implementation of snakes and ladders board games can be said succesful if 85% of students’ reach standard minimum score that was 70. Based on the result above, the researcher concluded that the research increased students’ speaking skill.
From the result above, it can be said that the using of snakes and ladders board games was effective, enjoyable and interesting. It can be seen from the significant increasing of students’ speaking test result during cylce I to cycle II.
