The Effect of Inquiry Chart (I-Chart) Strategy toward Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement at Tenth Grade of MA Darul Akhlaq Toronan Pamekasan

Reading is one of English skills taught as a major in English teaching and learning. It becomes an aspect on how students learn English through an instrument namely written text. Basically reading cannot be separated with comprehension, as David Nunan stated that reading is to comprehend a written text through an interactive process between the reader and the text, in this case the reader is required to fit the clue provided in the text. So that it will create reading by comprehending. As a matter of fact, there are many reading text materials which provide the diversity of meaning as well as implicit information. This condition complicates students to read the text through comprehend its meaning and grab the information provided as well. Thus, it is needed an appropriate strategy in reading in order the students are able to comprehend the content of the text thoroughly. Such as Inquiry Chart strategy. By using this strategy, the students will comprehend the content of the text read through making questions based on its topic.
The main problems of this research are do the students who taught by using Inquiry chart (I-chart) strategy have better achievement toward their reading comprehension at tenth grade of MA Darul-Akhlaq Toronan Pamekasan and is there any significant effect of Inquiry Chart (I-Chart) Strategy toward students’ reading comprehension achievement at Tenth Grade of MA Darul Akhlaq Toronan Pamekasan. Since Inquiry Chart strategy is one of reading strategy which can help students to be easier in comprehending text through making questions based on the topic of the text.
In this research, the researcher uses quantitative research approach namely pre-experimental research design, and the population of this research is all the students of tenth grade which is only one class so that it is called by sample population. The instruments used in collecting data are test and documentation. While the technique of data anlysis is statistical “t” test analysis. This research was conducted on 3rd till 24th April 2014.
The result of this research shows that using Inquiry Chart strategy has significant effect toward students’ reading comprehension at tenth grade of MA Darul Akhlaq Toronan Pamekasan. It is proven from the result of data analysis and hypothesis testing. It indicates that after giving treatment by using Inquiry Chart strategy the students’ score is higher than before giving treatment. The mean value of pre-test is 63,70 and post-test is 77,03. The difference is 13,33 points. While the result of “t” test analysis found that the value of “t” test is higher than “t” table, the value of “t” test is 3,95. While the critical value in df / db 26 on 1% is 2,78, on 5% is 2,06.
