Speaking is the action of passing information or expressing thoughts and feeling in spoken language. People have to have confidence to speak fluently. Self-confidence is a personal factor that pays a supportive role in the student achievement of language learning. Students who posses self-confidence perform well and most likely believe themselves to be capable learners. Among the four language skills, the achievement of oral performance is thought to be highly correlated with self-confidence. From the preliminary research in SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pamekasan, the students have self confidence in practicing English speaking skill.
There are two research problem in this research. The first is do students who have a good self confidence have a good speaking skill in the tenth grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pamekasan? And the second is there any statistical significant correlation of the students’ self confidence to The Students’ Speaking skill in The Tenth Grade at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pamekasan?.
In this research uses quantitative approach and the kind of this research was non experimental design, namely was correlational study because it correlated between two variable.
The population of this research is students at the tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pamekasan. In addition, the researcher use cluster sampling to take sample which is the first of the tenth grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pamekasan that consists of 20 students. The instruments used in this research are questionnaire, test and documentation. While in analyzing the data, the researcher use correlation product moment formula.
The result of this research represented that Student who have a good self confidence do not have a good speaking skill. Because having a good self confidence do not always help them to have a good speaking skill. It proven by the result of the research that even the student who have a good self confidence they still obtain low speaking skill. And also there is no significant correlation of student self-confidence to the students speaking skill at the tenth grade of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pamekasan.
It proven by the result from the computation of r value that r-value of this research is lower than r-table in significant level 95% (r-value r- table or -0,129 0,456). Also, the r-value is lower than r-table in significant level 99% since r-table in significant level 99% is 0,575 (r-value r-table or -0,129 0,575).
