Reading Comprehension is one of English skill which must be undergone by all levels in education world. The students can get many knowledge and news via reading. So, without having good reading comprehension the students will also difficult in learning English. Dealing with this case, the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension must be the priority of the teacher from elementary levels until high school, providing the good strategy in each meeting must be applied by the teacher. One of the strategy is Reciprocal Teaching.
The researcher intended to conduct the research about the influence of using Reciprocal Teaching Strategy to students’ reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP YAS’A Sumenep. This school choosen because the researcher found that the students are difficult in learning English especially in reading comprehension. The researcher formulates two main problems, they are: (1) Is there any influence of using reciprocal teaching strategy to students reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP Yas’A Sumenep?. And (2) How far the influence of using reciprocal teaching strategy to students reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP Yas’A Sumenep?.
To revealed the answers, the researcher applied quantitative research, in which the data is analyzed by using statistical procedures. This research is designed true experimental research that involves variable X as independent variable (Reciprocal Teaching Strategy) and variable Y as dependent variable (students' reading comprehension). The subject of this research is the students at the eight grades of SMP Yas’A sumenep. It consist of two classes, these are VIII A that consists of 36 students as the experimental group, and the students at VIII B with 35 students as the control group. Amount the students are 71 students.
The results of this study are (1) The students at the eighth grade of SMP Yas’A sumenep learning reading by using reciprocal teaching strategy have better reading comprehension. It is shown by The students in experimental group who get treatments get better result, the mean score of experimental group are higher than mean score of control group (16 > 3,8888). (2) The influence of using reciprocal teaching strategy to students reading comprehension at the eight grade of SMP Yas’A Sumenep is very significant. The result is taken from the statistical analysis that shows t-value is higher than t-table. The t-value is 2,502. After t-value consulted with t-table in df = 70 and significant 5% (2,000). It means that this research accept the alternative hypothesis.
Based on the result above, it is suggested to the teacher should be more creative in applying the teaching technique in the classroom in order the students will study happily and spirited. Applying reciprocal teaching strategy is one of the choices that can be applied in teaching reading comprehension.
