The Effect of American Pronunciation Style to students’ Listening Comprehension at the Second semester of English Teaching Learning Program STAIN Pamekasan

Listening is the process of receiving information related with verbal message or even non verbal message. This is a very crucial process as has major role in human’s life communication. Based on JJ Wilson’s statement in the categories of difficulties in listening is characteristic of the delivery that Mode of delivery is a vital factor. It is related how speaker delivered information to the listener such as the pronunciation style that the speaker used and one of the pronunciation style examples is American pronunciation style. Besides, pronunciation style becomes one of important factors in listening subject moreover on students’ listening comprehension because in this case students need to recognize each pronunciation style which various among others and by comprehending the various pronunciation they will get better listening comprehension.
There are two problem statements in this research. The first is whether American pronunciation style affects students’ listening comprehension at the second semester of English teaching learning program STAIN Pamekasan. The second is how significant American pronunciation style affects students' listening comprehension at the second semester of English teaching learning program STAIN Pamekasan.
This research applied quantitative research, in which the data is analyzed by using statistical procedures. This research is true experimental research that involves variable X as independent variable (American pronunciation style) and variable Y as dependent variable (students' listening comprehension). The subject of this research is the students at the second semester of English teaching learning program STAIN Pamekasan involves students in E class which consists of 35 students and F class in which consists of 38 students. E class is control group and F class is as experimental group. The instrument of documentation used in collecting data related with variable Y, variable Y which is students' listening comprehension. Test is used to collect the data of variable X which is American pronunciation style.
The result of this study is there is effect of American pronunciation style to students’ listening comprehension at the second semester of English teaching learning program STAIN Pamekasan. The students in experimental group who get treatments that are taught listening by using American pronunciation style get good result after it is compared the mean score with mean score from control group. It is also proven by comparing the t value (3, 955) to t table (2, 00) in 5% significant level with degree of freedom is 70 and it is got (t value > t table or 3, 955 > 2, 00). In which the Alternative hypothesis in this research is accepted.
Based on the result above, it is suggested to educational server such as English lecturer and English teacher especially listening lecturer to expose more related with American pronunciation style in teaching listening. Besides, it is also suggested to recognize more variation of pronunciation style. So that, it can enrich students knowledge related with pronunciation to help them get better listening comprehension especially in listening subject.
