The Effect of Guessing Word Game on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at the Seventh Grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul Tlanakan

People with large vocabulary are more proficient in language skills than those who have little vocabulary. In this case vocabulary plays a major role in people’s language mastery. It is supported by Thorburry who stated without grammar very little can be conveyed, without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed. The learning of vocabulary needs many strategies. Games considered as the effective way in presenting new vocabulary. Guessing word game is a game that required the students to speculate what is the correct word being presented.
There are two research problems of this study. First, are students taughtvocabulary by guessing word game have better vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul, Tlanakan. Second, is there any statistically significant effect of using guessing word game on students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul, Tlanakan.
This study is to find out whether the students taughtvocabulary by guessing word game have better vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul, Tlanakan or not and to measure how significant is the effect of guessing word game on students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul, Tlanakan.
The population in this study is all students at the seventh grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul, Tlanakan. Moreover, the researcher takes all the students of the seventh grade as sample of this research. The number of the student is ten students. The instruments used in this research are test and documentation. Test used to measure the students’ vocabulary mastery before and after teratment. Documentation was used to obtain students’ score, pre-test and post-test score, lesson plan, the students’ name list and the photoes during the researcher gave treatment. This research uses quantitative approach in which the research design is pre-experimental or one group pre-test, post-test design. In analyzing the data the researcher used independent t-test.
The result showed that the students taught vocabulary using guessing word game have better vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul Tlanakan and also there is statistically significant effect of using guessing word game on students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Al-Hikmah Gugul, Tlanakan.It was proven by the result of t0 of this research is 6,709. It is higher than the value of tt with df = 9 (N-1) in significant level of tt0,975(2,26)and in significant level of t0,995 (3,25) (t0 > tt or 6,709 > 2,26/3,25).
Based on the result above, it is suggested the English teacher to apply some different games in teaching vocabulary toattract the students’ attention. Therefore the variation of the teacher’s game should be implemented.For the further researcher if intend to do a research about guessing word, better apply another variation of guessing word as have been mentioned.
