Contrastive Analysis of Madurese and Bugis Students’ in Learning English Pronunciation at the Eleventh of Senior High School in Masalembu Island

Generally, every people has differences in acquiring the language, they have own characteristic on producing their language. They can produce their language fastly, slowly or normally based on their characteristic and their environment themselves. Although they are in the same environment, imposibility that they do not have the same development on their language, as like as Bugis and Madurese that have different on their utterance. Their difference is about learning English pronunciation especially in intonation and stress aspects. Based on the phenomena, the researcher interested to conduct this research and analyze the contrastive analysis between Madurese and Bugis students in learning English pronunciation in intonation and stress aspects.
There are two research focuses on this research; the first is What are the Bugis and the Madurese students’ differences on producing stress and intonation at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Masalembu Island?And the second is How does the Bugis and the Madurese intonation and stress production at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Masalembu Island?The objective of this research is to know about the differences of Bugis and Madurese stress and intonation at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Masalembu Island and to describe how Bugis and Madurese student’s stress and intonation at the eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Masalembu Island.
To conduct this research, the researcher uses the qualitative approach and the kind of research is descriptive research. To take the data researcher uses observation and documentation as the research instruments. The researcher explains the contrastive analysis between Madurese and Bugis students in learning English pronunciation in intonation and stress aspects by using the description of their dialog and then researcher analyzed their contrastive both in intonation and stress aspects by using the theory of the degrees of stress and the pattern of intonation itself.
Based on the result of analyze, the researcher found the contrastive both in intonation and stress aspects between Bugis and Madurese’s utterances. For Madurese students, it can be concluded that they tended to pronounce some words with weak stress rather than with strong stress. Madurese students pronounced the words slower and clearer and they also pauses within two words. While Bugis students pronounced the English words faster or with high speed between a word and the coming word itself.
Therefore, their utterance had have difference in intonation and stress aspects. And the difference of intonation contour itself is based on the difference of context of the sentences.
