In learning foreign language especially English, Indonesian students are expected to master all the skills. Foreign language has different rules with Indonesian language (mother languag). So the students will get some difficulties and also need much time to learn and understand it. The different structure between Indonesia and English could make students make some grammatical errors in writing.
There are two research focuses in this research. The first one is what kind of error do the students of SMA Dempo Timur Pasean Pamekasan in writing argumentation in using reported speech, then the second one is what are the causes of the error.
This study is to analyze the kind of errors do the students of SMA Dempo Timur Pasean Pamekasan in writing argumentation text in using reported speech and to find out the causes of the errors.
This research will describe by using qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. In collecting the data, the researcher uses some techniques are observation, documentation, and interview. Then after collecting the data, the reseacher analyzed it through Miles and Hubermans’ step as follow: identifying the data, classifying the data, analyzing the data, drawing and conclusion.
The result showed that the students make some error in three categories such as: error of the tenses, pronoun (pronoun as subject, pronoun as object and possessive pronoun), and the last one is error in adverb of time. And the caused of the erro because they did not habbit with the rules of tenses.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for English teacher to solve the students’ difficulties especially in writing skill. And the teacher should give more clear explanation of grammatical rules. The teacher should know their students’ ability of writing skill, because of it the teacher can solve the students’ problem. Thus, the teacher also should give motivation and support the student to have more practice their writing skil
