In learning a foreign language, we need to have a communication competence. It means that speaking is the most important skill in English as a foreign language. So that, in the teaching speaking to the students, the English teacher must create the situation that can encourage real communication, many activities can be designed to make majors’ element lively. Motivation is one of the techniques that can be applied in teaching speaking because, motivation has been identified as the learner's orientation with regard to the goal of learning a second language
This research is a quantitative. There are two research problems in this research. First, is there any effect of students’ motivation on students' speaking skill of the second semester students’ of TBI at STAIN Pamekasan, second, how significance is the effect of students’ motivation on speaking skill of the second semester students of TB at STAIN Pamekasan. Based on the two research problems, there are two research objectives. The first, this research is conducted to find out is there any effect of students’ motivation upon speaking skill of second semester students of TBI at STAIN Pamekasan, and the second, it is to describe the significance effect of students’ motivation upon speaking skill of second semester students of TBI at STAIN Pamekasan.
The population of this research is the population of this research is at the second Semester of English Department at Stain Pamekasan academic year 2010/2011 which consists of 186 students. The sample is 20% of the population which taken by using cluster sampling. This research used Quantitative approach by using statistical method namely correlation coefficient r product moment. The instruments which were used in conducting the research are questionnaire, documentation, interview and observation.
The result of this research shows that the effect of students’ motivation to improve speaking skill in the second semester of English department at STAIN Pamekasan is enough significant. It is proved from the result of correlation coefficient r product moment for n=38 got score 0, 621 is greater than the table of coefficient correlation price of “r” product moment in standard of significant between 5% is 0,305or 1% is 0,393. Furthermore, for score of “r” n=38 got score 0, 621 is consulted with the table interpretation of coefficient correlation r product moment in interpretation 0, 600-0, 800 is enough interpretation. .
Based on the result of this research above, there is effect of students’ motivation to improve speaking skill in the second semester of TBI at STAIN Pamekasan.
