Pronounciation is the way to pronounce a words in English. One of element

phonetics. The aims of this research is to correlate between the students’ phonetic
transcription mastery and their pronounciation ability of the students at the third
semester of English teaching learning program of IAIN Madura and to know how
significant correlation between both of them. There are two variables in this
research, they are students’ phonetic transcription mastery becomes independent
variable and the students’ pronounciation ability becomes dependent variable.
This research used quantitative research, exactly correlational research. The
cluster random sampling used in this research to take the sample and was obtained
at the third semester class English Teaching Learning Program of IAIN Madura,
there are four class which consist of 67 students but the researcher only took 30
students as a sample. To collect the data, the researcher used tests for the two
phonetic and pronounciation ability. The data collected was analyzed by using
Rank Spearman formula to know the better students at the third semester of
English teaching learning program of IAIN Madura have phonetic transcription
mastery, is the better or not their pronounciation ability
Based on the result of analysis by using Rank Spearman formula showed
that the value of coefficient correlation is 0,048 and rtable with df is 30 in
significance level 5% is 0,36, Regarding this, it is said that the value of rs is lower
than the value of rtable (0,048 < 0,364) and based on the table interpretation the
result of rs is in interval 0.00 to 0.25 which means the correlation between of two
variables is low or it is consider as nothing correlation. It means the better
students at the third semester of English teaching learning program of IAIN
Madura have phonetic transcription mastery, is not necessarily the better their
pronounciation ability and vice versa. Meanwhile, the significant value was 0,082
which was more than 0,5 (p>0,5). It means there is no significant correlation
between students’ phonetic transcription mastery and pronounciation ability at the
third semester of English teaching learning program of IAIN Madura. Therefore
in the current research, Ha rejected and Ho accepted.
