Students’ Difficulties in Completing TOEFL on Structure and Written Expression at The 6th Semester Students of English Teaching Learning Program IAIN Madura Academic Year 2021-2022

This research was conducted based on a phenomena found in 6th semester
students of English teaching learning program IAIN Madura academic year 2021-
2022 which show that the majority of the students did not pass the TOEFL. The
research focus of this research is what are the students’ difficulties in completing
TOEFL on structure and written expression at the 6th semester students of English
teaching learning program IAIN Madura academic year 2021-2022. The research
objective is to know the students’ difficulties in completing TOEFL on structure
and written expression at the 6th semester students of English Teaching Learning
Program IAIN Madura academic year 2021-2022.
This research was qualitative approach and used descriptive analysis. The
population of this research is 163 students of the 6th semester students of English
teaching learning program IAIN Madura academic year 2021-2022. Meanwhile,
the sample of this research the researcher represented as much as 10-15% or 24
students with the lowest TOEFL scores because the population more than 100
people. The location of this research was at the State Islamic Institute of Madura
on Jl. Raya Panglegur KM. 4 Pamekasan. Three instruments that used were
observation, interview and documentation. Besides, the researcher used three
techniques to analyze the data, they were data reduction, data display and
conclusion or verification drawing.
The research result of this research was found the difficulties faced by
students on aspects of structure and written expression were consisted of verb
agreement, parallel structure, the use of verbs, the use of nouns, the use of
pronouns, the use of adjectives, athe use of rticles, the use of prepositions, usage
(group of words), the use of connectors, inversion, and the participles. In
answering the questions regarding the topic, majority of the students could not
answer the questions correctly. Based on the research findings, this research
suggested for the students should pay attention in teacher’s explanation, do a lot
of practice and must be motivated in learning English. Furthermore, it is
suggested to do the similar research on TOEFL in different aspects.
