An Analysis of Students’ Errors in Using Punctuation and Capitalization in Writing Descriptive Text at Tenth Grade in MAN Sumenep

This research was conducted based on a phenomenon found in tenth grade
students at MAN Sumenep. They did not pay attention and even ignored in the use
of punctuation and capitalization, especially for class X-B students, there were even
some students who did not know about punctuation. The research focus in this
research is what are the types of students’ errors in using punctuation and
capitalization in writing descriptive text and how are the errors happen of students’
errors in using punctuation and capitalization in writing descriptive text at tenth
grade in MAN Sumenep.
This research uses a qualitative approach that produces descriptive data,
because the researcher describes about what are the types of students’ errors in
using punctuation and capitalization in writing descriptive text the researcher found
in the students at X-B class in MAN Sumenep and how are the errors happen of
students’ errors in using punctuation and capitalization in writing descriptive text.
Researchers used observation and also documentation to collect data. As for the
data analysis used starts from data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The results of this study found that students made an error in using
punctuation and capitalization in writing descriptive text. So, the students’ made an
error in punctuations such as in using period, comma and colon. On the
capitalization the students’ made an error, such as; in using the first word in a
sentence, the names of specific places on map, names of people and their titles,
names of days, writing title, the abbreviations and in the middle of the sentence they
also made an error in writing that should not have needed to use capital letters.
Based on the result above, it is suggested for English teachers to become
good facilitators during the teaching and learning process, especially in terms of
writing skills more thoroughly and paying attention to the procedures for using
punctuation and capitalization in the descriptive text, such as by giving frequent
writing practice so that students are more often practice to write. It is also
recommended for students at MAN Sumenep to be serious in the teaching and
learning process, especially in writing descriptive text, because it requires a lot of
concentration to gain knowledge in lessons. It is also recommended fore future
researchers, with the results of this research can be used as a reference or input to
conduct further research on similar topics using different research designs.
