The Analysis of Direct and Indirect Speech Acts Uttered by Master Shifu in Kung Fu Panda 3 Movie
Keyword: Speech Acts, Master Shifu, Kung Fu Panda 3
In our daily life, we use languages not only for conveying information or
talking to each other, but also performing some kind of actions. Those could be
stating, asking, ordering, promising, and so on. It is what we called as speech acts.
According to George Yule, there are two kinds of direct speech acts based on the
structure. Those are direct and indirect speech acts. Direct speech acts is when there
is a direct relationship between the structures of the utterance with the function,
while in indirect speech acts, the relationship is indirect. We could find speech acts
not only in our daily activities. Because of technology, we could find it in a media,
such as a movie.
This research was aimed to describe the direct and indirect speech acts
uttered by Master Shifu in Kung Fu Panda 3 movie. To analyze those speech acts,
the researcher used qualitative approach and the kind of research is library research.
The data was taken from the utterances by Master Shifu in the Kung Fu Panda 3
movie and then the researcher saw the structures and the functions to determine
whether the utterance is direct or indirect speech acts.
The result of this research showed twenty three utterances uttered by Master
Shifu. Seventeen of those are direct speech acts and six of those are indirect speech
acts. The seventeen direct speech acts consist of eleven declarative sentences to
convey information, three interrogatives to ask information, and three imperative
sentences as order or command. The six indirect speech acts consist of two
declarative sentences which the functions are as order, two interrogatives as
statements to convey information, one interrogative sentence as an order, and one
imperative sentence which the function is to convey information. Those utterances
also were followed by the analysis of the direct and indirect speech acts.
The researcher thinks that this research is still very imperfect. So, the
researcher hopes any suggestions from the readers and another researcher in order
that the researcher is able to make a better research in the future. Hopefully, this
research could give any benefit to the readers and another researcher.
