The Implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum in Teaching Reading comprehension At seventh Grade Students SMPN 1 Pamekasan

Merdeka Belajar is a new curriculum implemented by the Ministry of
Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia.
Merdeka Belajar Curriculum (MBC) gives freedom to teachers to design learning
that suits the needs of students. English teacher of SMPN 1 implements MBC in
teaching reading to the students. This research concern with the implementation of
Merdeka Belajar in teaching reading and the perceptions of teachers and students
about its implementation.
The type of research used is quantitative descriptive research which is
carried out in natural conditions, about what actually happens in accordance with
what is in the field of study. The researchers would explain the implementation of
Merdeka Belajar in teaching reading comprehension and the perceptions of
teachers and students about its implementation.at SMPN 1 Pamekasan. The data
are collected by observation. interviews, and documentation. Data analysis uses
Miles Huberman techniques.
The results showed that the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar
Curriculum in learning reading comprehension at SMPN 1 Pamekasan had gone
well. Teachers have the freedom to design learning according to student needs.
The teacher used Discovery Learning, lectures, discussions and exercises. The
teacher perception and students’ perception of implementation of MBC are the
teaching use a variety of learning methods to suit students' needs and interests and
teachers can give students more freedom to choose what they learn and how they
learn it. Besides that, it can create a more fun and engaging learning environment
for students by using a variety of learning methods and activities. Nevertheless,
Merdeka Belajar encourages students to become independent learners.
Researcher suggests to conduct further studies to evaluate the long-term
impact of the Merdeka Belajar Curriculum on students' academic performance and
their ability to apply critical and creative thinking skills in other subject areas. and
Comparative studies can be conducted to assess the effectiveness of the Merdeka
Belajar Curriculum in various schools or regions, providing a broader perspective
on its implementation.
