An Analysis of Students’ Anxiety in Learning English as Foreign Language at the Seventh Grade of MTsN 1 Pamekasan

English is one of International language in this world. Learning English
as foreign language is different with learning first language. That is why
students have to learn it in the school to master it like the first language.
Because it is a new language for the students, they face differents situations
when they learn English in the class. Some of the students do not feel good,
like feeling nervous, anxious, shocked an others when the face English subject.
Because of those feelings, the students show some characteristics that are
shown that they are not in a good condition when they learn English. Therefore
knowing the factors that cause them feel like that is important so that the
students can solve it and learn English well.
There are two main problems in this research. The first, the researcher
wants to kow about the factors that cause the students feel anxious when they
learn English as foreign language in the class, and the second, the reseacher
wants to know about how the students solve students’ anxiety in learning
English as foreign language in the class. This research is qualitative
descriptive. The data are taken from observation, interview and documentation.
The source of this research is the seventh grade students of MTsN 1
Pamekasan. In checking the validity of data, the researcher uses technical
triangulation.
Based on the result of observation, interview and documentation
conducted in this research, the factors that cause students feel anxious in
learning English as foreign language are because English is difficult so that
they are afraid to communicate in the class (commmunication apprehension)
and they are afraid of making mistakes and being ridiculed by their friends
(fear of negative evaluation). In addition, the way they use to solve anxiety is
silent, gathering with their friends who know more about English or making
close friends with other friends and doing a preparation before learning English
in the class.
From the result of analysis, every student has different factors that
cause them feel anxious in learning English, and has different ways to solve it
to make their feeling good when learning English in the class.
