An Analysis of Translation Methods on Moana Movie’s Indonesian Subtitle

The translation is one of the most important parts in learning English to
know the right way in translating from source to target language. The translation is
transferring the source language to the target language. Translation can't be done
just because translated meanings can't be made clear so there's a misunderstanding.
It is, therefore, necessary to know the methods used in translations to communicate
messages and cultures contained in the source language to the target language. Like
translating subtitles in movies including Moana movies where translators use
languages that can be accepted and understood by target languages even though
there are still some hard language uses. There are two purposes in this research: the
first is to find out the translation methods used in Moana movie’s Indonesian
subtitles. The second is to know the meaning of the translation methods used in
Moana movie’s Indonesian subtitle.
In this study, researchers use descriptive qualitative research methods that
focus on describing the entire translation method data used in Moana subtitles
analyzed based on Peter Newmark's theory and analyzing the meaning in translation
based on Nababan’s theory. In collecting data, researchers use documentation to
capture images of sentences that use translation methods to find out any method of
translation that is used in Moana subtitles along with its meaning.
From the results of the research, researchers found the answers of research
problems explained before. The first, there are 8 types of translation methods used
in Moana movie’s Indonesian subtitles, which are: 1 word for word translation, 1
literal translation, 7 faithful translation, 1 semantic translation, 11 adaptation
translation, 4 free translation, 4 idiomatic translation, and 1 communicative
translation. The second is there are 5 types of the meaning of translation methods
that used on Moana movie’s Indonesian subtitle, there are: 2 lexical meaning, 1
grammatical meaning, 4 textual meaning, 19 contextual meaning, and 4 sociocultural meaning
In concluding, there are methods of translation from the perspective of Peter
Newmark that are used by translators in the Indonesian subtitles of the Moana file
and the meaning of the messages and cultures that are found in the source-language
text.
