An Analysis of Translation Procedures Used in the English Version of “Instagram” Social Networking Website

The translation procedure is a translation method that aims to
transfer the elements of meaning from the source text (ST) to the target text
(TT). The theory proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet is used to identify and
describe which procedure is adopted by the translator to establish the closest
translation equivalent. Translation procedures used to transfer the meaning
of a text in one language to text in another language. Vinay and Darbelnet
stated that there are seven translation procedures, namely: (1) Borrowing.
(2) Calque. (3) Literal translation. (4) Transposition. (5) Modulation. (6)
Equivalent. (7) Adaptation.
There are two research focuses in this research. (1) To find out the
situation of Instagram users in translating Instagram from English into
Indonesian. (2) To find out and analyze the translation procedures used by
Instagram users in translating Instagram from English into Indonesian.
This study uses a qualitative approach with the type of library
research. The techniques used in data collection are: observation,
interviews, and documentation, with data analysis, namely: data reduction,
data display, and drawing conclusion (verification). Techniques for data
validity in the study were theory triangulation.
The results show that: (1) There are three situations for Instagram
users to translate Instagram from English into Indonesian, namely: (a)
Quotes word in Instagram. (b) Pearl word in Instagram. (c) Motivational
word in Instagram. (2) The translation procedures used by the translator to
translate data are transposition, literal translation, borrowing, adaptation,
and modulation.
