The Use of the Lecture Method in Teaching English on Tenth Grade of SMA Terpadu AL Maarif Pangarengan Sampang

In Teaching English, a lot of teachers use some methods in teaching and
learning process. The goal is the lessons that will delivered by teacher is more
easier to understand by the students. But, there is a teachers that still use an old
method namely is lecturing method to delivered their material to the students.
This method is stiil use by english teacher at SMA Terpadu AL Maarif
Pangarengan Sampang
There are two main problems that the researcher wants to research are (a)
how does the teacher uses the lecture method in teaching English on tenth-grade
of SMA Terpadu AL Maarif Pangarengan Sampang. (b) What are the strengths
and weaknesses of the lecture method in teaching English on tenth-gradeof SMA
Terpadu AL Maarif Pangarengan Sampang.
This researcher uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive research
type. The source of the data obtained was through interviews and documentation
without making observations because it was constrained by Covid 19 which made
it impossible to make observations. The informants were an English teacher at
SMA Terpadu AL Maarif Pangarengan Sampang and the students on tenth grade
of SMA Terpadu AL Maarif Pangarengan Sampang.
The results of the study indicate that the use of the lecture method in te
aching English has three stages, namely pre teaching, midst teaching, and post
teaching. In the pre-teaching stage the teacher opens the lesson by saying
greetings first then checks the attendance list of students and is followed by
repeating the previous material. the midst teaching stage the teacher begins to link
the past lessons with the current material (if related) and begins to explain the
material on that day. For example, on that day the material about introductions,
the teacher will explain the meaning of the introduction first and then to whom the
introduction is used and the function of the introduction will also be explained.
To find out the exten to which the rest of the teacher understands, the teacher will
give a session to ask questions, and if no one asks, the teacher will ask students to
practice in front of them and if they feel enough, the teacher will not give
additional assignments. For the final session, students provide a conclusion on the
material on that day, and lessons on that day are closed. Furthermore, the
strenghts of this method is that it is easier to do while the weaknes is that the
teacher is more dominant in the teaching and learning processv
