Vocabulary is one of components in learning English. It is important to learn vocabulary though before learning four skills in English language learning. Learning vocabulary indicates acquiring number of words by considering the meaning and the usage of the word itself. Vocabulary mastery can be defined as someone can use the vocabulary based on the usage itself and know the grammatical structural of the words as second language well. In vocabulary mastery, learners must apply some strategies within. Effective strategies for learning vocabulary help learners understand and learn new words, make sense of new vocabulary by integrating it with what they have known, and remember the meaning of words when encountered at a later date or in new material. The researcher is interested to study the vocabulary learning strategies used by members of Asrama Puteri Khadijah (APK) Pamekasan in vocabulary mastery.
Researcher decided three research focuses, they are: what strategies of vocabulary learning are used by members of Asrama Puteri Khadijah (APK) Pamekasan in mastering vocabulary, how the strategies of vocabulary learning are used by members of Asrama Puteri Khadijah (APK) Pamekasan to master vocabulary, what are the impacts of the strategies of vocabulary learning those are used by members of Asrama Puteri Khadijah (APK) Pamekasan to master vocabulary.
In this research, the researcher uses qualitative as an approach of this research and descriptive as kind of the research. The researcher uses three instruments in collecting the data; observation, interview and documentation. For analyzing the data, the researcher uses data reduction, data display, and verification. Then the researcher uses triangulation of method in checking the validity of data.
The result of this research found by the researcher is that the members at Asrama Puteri Khadijah (APK) Pamekasan use some vocabulary learning strategies in vocabulary mastery; these include determination strategies which used using dictionary and guessing the meaning based on the context, social strategies with asking to tutor or roommate and learning vocabulary in group, memory strategies those used in grouping the words and using key words, cognitive strategies in keeping noting the words, and repeating the new words many times verbally, metacognitive strategies which member is tested and by watching on Youtube, watching movie or listening to music dealing with vocabulary learning.
