THE ANALYSIS OF DICTION USED BY MAIN CHARACTER IN THE PLAY BOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD DRAMA SCRIPT BY JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE

Basically, drama is one of literature which is a social and cultural activity, one of the Drama is the Playboy of the Western World, it is a three-act play drama written by Irish playwright John Millington Synge and first performed at the Abbey Theatre, Dublin, on 26 January 1907, the drama written and performed by the main character contains the use of diction. Meanwhile Diction is a choice of words. It means choosing the right word to say something. There is only one research focus in this study. Namely, how is the type of dictions used by the Main Character in the Play Boy of the Western World drama by John Millington Synge. In this research, the researcher qualitative approach. While, the kind of research used is content analysis in which the researcher focused on analyzing and interpreting recorded or written material to learn about human behavior. Content analysis is written materials for the purpose of identifying specified characteristics of the material itself. The result of this research found that the types of dictions used by the main character in the Drama is the Playboy of the Western World are both idiom or idiomatic expressions and slang, the type of diction used by the main character in the Play Boy of the Western World drama by John Millington Synge are idiom or idiomatic expression and British slang, it showed several verbs combined with preposition, noun and adjective which transform new meaning deals with the contextual use, as well as the intention of the speaker in this case Christy as the main character who conveyed them. The example of the dictions used are; Cry out “scream because of a pain, or scared of something”, Take an oath “say something as it is a cursing”, Run off “escape from someone because of certain situation”, Throng around “to be crowded entering a place, to jostle of getting something”, Rise up “invite to awake from downturn, give encouragement, motivate”, Digging in “enter something in”. While British slang is Knackered “tiring condition, exhausted, tired”, Fortnight “two weeks longing”, Bugger all “nothing at all”, and soon. It can be concluded that the diction used by the main character in the Play Boy of the Western World drama by John Millington Synge is seventy-seven idiom or idiomatic expressions, and six British slang, most of that idioms are verb, while the slang is in the form of noun.
