IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY BY USING AUDIO LINGUAL METHOD AT THE FIFTH GRADE OF SDN PAGENDINGAN 2

Vocabulary is very important in learning foreign language. By mastering it, there will be no difficulties which the foreign language learners face in developing four language skills such as: listening, speaking, writing, and reading. In the phenomenon at SDN Pagendingan 2, most of the students get difficulties in memorizing vocabulary, they are lack of vocabulary. To help the teacher in teaching English, teacher may use an interesting method to present their teaching material. One of the the alternative method is audio lingual method.
Audio Lingual Method is a method for foreign language teaching which point out the teaching of listening and speaking before reading and writing. In this method, the researcher uses repetition, substitution and translation drill to drill speaking skill especially student’s vocabulary. The teacher is easier to control the student’s behavior and student’s vocabulary. After that, the teacher can know the memorization of the students’ vocabulary.
This study use classroom action research (CAR) that consist of two cycles. Each cycle consist of four step, they are planning, action, observation, and reflection. Before the study started, the researcher an also as a teacher is doing pre-research to know the student’s vocabulary that the result 55% passed and 45% failed. It's means that the students’ vocabulary at the fifth grade still lack because the researcher have the target of percentage 75%.
In the first cycle the result were 65% passed and 35% failed. It is not reached the target, so the researcher did the second cycle. The results of the second cycle were 85% passed and 15% failed. In the second cycle, students reached the target and it's successful enough. So, the researcher did not redo the cycle.
Based on the result of research, the average of students' score in cycle 1 was 73,9 and the student’s score in cycle 2 was increase 10 point than cycle 1 namely 83,2 point. It was successful enough because the students that get score more than 71 were 17 students and it's suitable with expectation of researcher that is 75%of students passed the test.
In conclusion, Audio Lingual method can be used to improve the students’ vocabulary at the fifth grade of SDN Pagendingan 2. Therefore, it is suggested to the English teachers to implement the audio Lingual method in teaching and learning process. The English teacher should give more attention toward the student’s vocabulary, because vocabulary became the basic foundation of the four languages skill. Without vocabulary the students are difficult to mastering English.
