A CORRELATIONAL STUDY BETWEEN THE ENGLISH LEARNING ANXIETY AND THE SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT OF SECOND SEMESTER STUDENTS OF TBI AT IAIN MADURA

Keyword: English Learning Anxiety, Speaking Achievement. Speaking is one of the best ways for student to show their abilities in English. Student’s speaking skill in English influenced by psychological aspect, in this case anxiety. When the students have high anxious feeling in speaking class, they may difficult to increase their ability and get low score in speaking subject. The problem of study: is there any correlation between the English learning anxiety and speaking achievement of second semester student of TBI at IAIN Madura. And how significant is the correlation between English learning anxiety and speaking achievement of second semester student of TBI at IAIN Madura. Based on the research the problem of study, the researcher made research objective. The first is to measure the correlation between English learning anxiety and speaking achievement of second semester student of TBI at IAIN Madura. The second is to investigate the degree of correlation between English learning anxiety and speaking achievement of second semester student of TBI at IAIN Madura. This research uses quantitative research design where the data is analyzed using statistical procedures. This research is correlation research which involves variable X as independent variable (speaking achievement) and variable Y as dependent variable (English learning anxiety). The population of this research is the students in speaking class at the second semester at TBI of IAIN Madura, including A, B, C, D, and E class. The sample of this research is 38 students by using simple random sampling. The research instruments are test used to get students’ speaking achievement (variable X) and questionnaire used to get students’ English learning anxiety score (variable Y). The researcher also gets that the questionnaire used has been valid and reliable. Those are proved that the researcher uses content related validity evidence and reliability value is higher than r table. The result of this research is that there is sufficient/enough correlation between variable X (independent variable) and variable (dependent variable). It is proved by the result of the correlation value that is 0,411 and it is higher than r table in 5 % significance. Based on the research, it can be concluded that there is correlation between English learning anxiety and speaking achievement of second semester student of TBI at IAIN Madura. The researcher also proposes some suggestions to some educational element such us lecturer, student and also to the future researchers.
