THE USE OF MIND MAP TECHNIQUE IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXTS FOR STUDENTS IN THE SEVENTH GRADE AT SMP KARTIKA IV-9 MALANG

In teaching the use of techniques provided by the teacher it is very important to improve students' abilities in the learning process. Mind map technique is one technique that can make the learning process more meaningful.
The focus in this study are 1) How do teachers use mind map techniques in writing descriptive text for students in VII grade at SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang? 2) What are the advantages of using mind map techniques in writing descriptive text for VII grade students at SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang? 3) What are the disadvantages of using mind map techniques in writing descriptive text for VII grade students at SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang ?. While the purpose of this study is first, to find out how the teacher uses mind map techniques in writing descriptive text for VII grade students at SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang. Secondly, to find out the advantages of using mind map techniques in writing descriptive text for VII grade students at SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang and the last to find out the weaknesses of using mind map techniques in writing descriptive text for VII grade students at SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang.
This research uses a qualitative approach and descriptive research. Because this research wants to know the application of teachers in using mind map techniques to the writing ability of grade VII students. Researchers use three ways to get data; observation, interview, documentation. While the object of this research is the VII grade English teacher.
The results of this study indicate that 1) English teachers have applied mind map techniques well based on the steps in mind map techniques. 2) The advantages of using mind map techniques in writing descriptive text are: First, to help students be more creative through the beautiful pictures they make in writing. Second, students are easier and understander in learning to write descriptive text. Third, students are more interested and enthusiastic about learning to write descriptive texts because this mind map technique is very simple. 3) The disadvantages of using mind map techniques in writing descriptive text are: First, students must follow the rules so students cannot develop maps as freely as possible on paper and second, the lack of vocab that makes them overwhelmed writing descriptive text.
Finally, based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the English teacher in class VII at SMP Kartika IV-9 Malang has applied mind map techniques well in teaching descriptive text writing and this technique can improve students' writing abilities.
