A SPEECH ACT ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS USED BY HILLARY CLINTON IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION DEBATE 2016 – 2020 PERIOD

Pragmatics is a part of linguistics which deals with meaning in context. There are some major aspects in pragmatic, one of them is speech act. Speech act is the basic unit of human communication. In the theory of speech acts, every utterance essentially contains three dimensions. The first is locutionary, the second is illocutionary, and the third is perlocutionary. Locutionary act is what the speaker says. Illocutionary is the purpose of the speaker says. And perlocutionary is the effect of what the speaker says. In politic sector especially in the process of presidential election, debate is one of part of the campaign which is done by each candidate of president to gain people support. In this case, each candidate of president will explore his or her intellectual capacity, vision and mission, and ideology to convince the public that he or she is reasonable to be a president in his or her country. In delivering or expressing his or her ideology, vision and mission, opinion and etc, he or she uses words or utterances as element so that the speaker can deliver the message as well as possible and the hearer can understand the meaning and the context of what the speaker said.
The aims of this research are to find out types of illocutionary acts and the function of illocutionary acts performed by Hillary Clinton in presidential election debate of United State.
This study uses qualitative approach and descriptive design. The data sources of this study is the utterances performed by Hillary Clinton in presidential election debate. The researcher obtained the data by doing four steps. First, reading the material or the transcription of the debate to be analysed. Second, finding illocutionary acts used by Hillary Clinton in each of her utterance. Third, recording the data into the data sheet, the last step is categorizing the data based on the classification of illocutionary acts and also the functions of illocutionary act. In the data analysis, the researcher applied interactive qualitative method by Miles and Huberman. Meanwhile, to test the validity of the data the researcher applied triangulation technique.
The result of the research show that there are five types of illocutionary acts performed by Hillary Clinton in which it shows that Hillary Clinton performed all types of illocutionary acts. They are assertives, commissives, directives, expressives, and declaratives. The assertives are the most frequent acts with 43 data from 66 data, while the declaratives are the fewest frequent acts with only 1 data. Furthermore, there are 17 types of illocutionary function used by Hillary Clinton. They are stating opinion, stating a fact, informing, agreeing, predicting, admitting, denying, suggesting, wishing, questioning, commending, recommending, promising, thanking, complimenting, expressing pride, and calling. The stating opinion is the most frequent function with 20 data, while agreeing, predicting, admitting, recommending, thanking, expressing pride and calling are the fewest with 1 datum.
