THE FORMALITY DEGREE AND FORMAT LETTER ANALYSIS ON REQUEST LETTER AT THE 3 rd SEMESTER OF TBI IN STAIN PAMEKASAN

request letter at 3 rd semester in STAIN Pamekasan Undergraduate,
Thesis, English Teaching Learning Program (TBI), The state of Islamic
college (STAIN) Pamekasan. Advisor: Abd.Ghofur, M.Pd.

When letter becomes a communication between student and
lecture by using English to give information to they couldn’t attend to the
class because of something to do or something trouble(sick) , sometimes
the student does not use formality word in the letter whereas that’s so
important to use to older than us,by using degree of formality will make
the reader more confortable and easier in defferentiate between the formal
sentence and less formal sentence even informal sentence when writer
especially for student would like to make the leter by purposing to inform
their condition
There are three research focuses in this study. the first is How does
the letter of request which is found in 3 rd semester TBI by using degree of
formality in STAIN Pamekasan.and the second is How did the format
letter which is found in request letter at the 3rd semester STAIN
Pamekasan. And the purpose of studies are first To know how request
letter which is found at the 3rd semester of TBI by using degree of
formality in STAIN Pamekasan and the second To know how are the
format letter in request letter at 3rd semester in STAIN Pamekasan
This study uses qualitative approach, with descriptive as the kind
of research, and observation and documentation as its technique of data
collection. Researcher collect the data by taking letter especially request
letter in the class after the class is finish and after that researcher analyse
degree of formality and format letter, the data sources of this study are
request letter which consists of 55 student’s request letters that can not
attend to class which was found in the third semester of TBI at STAIN
Pamekasan on november, formality degree and format letter analysis,
Then this study uses triangulation of source in order to check the validity
of data.
The finding of this study shows in formality degree analysis, the
word /sentence in each letter is vary, for example: in part of letter is
greeting; ”with respect” it’s the informal ,it should “dear” to be formality
degree and also in content such as “I want to say” (informal). ”I would
like to inform”(formal), ”was sick” (informal), ” was ill” (formal) ,”can
not follow /can not come” (informal), ”could not attend” (formal) so that
several student does not use formal sentence and formal letter format.
The suggestion also will address to the student and teacher.Hopefully The teacher can motivate the students to be careful in make
request letter by using degree of formality and formal letter fotmat, The
teacher can realize that the students need to learn how to make request
letter by using formal word and formal letter format.For student they can
get knowledge and they can be more careful when make English request
letter to their lecturer so that they can learn how to make English request
letter trough degree of formality and formal letter formal.
