TEACHER’S DIFFICULTIES IN TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES IN ENGLISH TEACHING LEARNING AT THE ELEVENTH GRADE OF HOTEL DEPARTMENT AT SMKN 3 PAMEKASAN

English for specific purposes (ESP) refers to the teaching and learning of
English as a second or foreign language where the goal of the learners is to use
English in a particular domain, so that English for Specific Purposes must be used
in Vocational High School. The researcher found that the teacher who teach
English for specific purposes face some difficulties in English teaching learning.
When the teacher teaches ESP like teaching English in hotel department
sometimes she is not the expert in that department. Whereas when the teacher
teaches ESP, she/he must use the materials that appropriate with the department.
But in fact, the teacher did not use materials that appropriate with their department
because she not expert in the department and difficult to get sources that related
with the department. It is one of the difficulties that faced by the teacher in
teaching ESP.
In this research there are two research focuses, the first is the difficulties
faced by teacher in teaching English for specific purposes in English teaching
learning and the second is how the teacher solve the problems.
The researcher uses qualitative research as approach of research and
descriptive as kind of research. A source of data is English teacher at eleventh
grade of hotel department. In collect the data, the researcher use research
procedures are namely interview, observation and documentation. And then the
researcher analyzes with identifying the data, classifying the data, analyzing the
data and drawing conclusion. Besides that, to get the validity of data the
researcher uses source triangulation.
The result of this research shows that the teacher’s difficulties in teaching
ESP in English teaching learning are the teacher felt difficult to give
terminologies about hotel department, difficult to get sources or materials that it
will be teach to the students about hotel department and the materials in the
handbook not appropriate with hotel department (the materials still general). The
teacher said that these components become the difficulties faced by her in
teaching ESP. The solutions done by the teacher in solving her problem in
teaching ESP include using special dictionary (set of terminologies) about hotel
management, the English teacher make a discussion group to sharing with other
teachers like MGMP to discussion about the materials that it will be teach to the
students and the teacher also using another reference (handbook).
From the statement above, suggest to the English teacher to be creative to
make the materials that appropriate with hotel department and pay attention to the
student’s need.
