THE EFFECT OF SILENT READING TECHNIQUE TO THE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF MTS AL-AMIN BUGIH PAMEKASAN

Reading is activity that makes people update their knowledge, and reading
skill can be tool for academic success. Because reading materials have complex
information, to make students easy understand the text the teacher should give
appropriate reading technique in teaching reading, by using silent reading
technique it make students easier in comprehend the content of the text.
The problem of this research is: Is there any significant effect of silent
reading technique on students reading comprehension achievement at eighth grade
of MTS Al-Amin Bugih, the researcher wants to find out whether any significant
effect silent reading technique to students’ reading comprehension at the Eighth
grade of MTs Al Amin Bugih Pamekasan.
The research design of this research is using quantitative approach exactly
Pre-experimental research design, there are two variables in this research, and
these are variable X and variable Y, variable X is silent reading technique and
variable Y is students’ reading comprehension. The population in this research is
all of students in Eighth grade of MTs Al Amin Bugih Pamekasan because the
population is only 33 students’ means that the population not more than 100
students then the researcher take the population as a sample in this case this
research is kind of population research. The instruments used in collecting the
data are tests and documentation. And this research was done not more than one
month from19th November 2014 until 29 November 2014, the technique of data
analysis used by researcher is “t” test analysis.
The result of this research showed that using silent reading technique in
reading comprehension has significant effect on reading comprehension at the
Eighth grade of MTs Al Amin Bugih Pamekasan. It is proven from the result of
the data analysis and hypothesis test that showed after the students get the
treatment silent reading technique the students’ score is higher than before the
students get the treatment. The mean value of pre test is 68,48 whereas the mean
value of post test is 89,09 the difference between pre test and post test is 20,61
points. From the result of “t” test analysis found that the value of “t” test is higher
than “t” table. The value of “t” test is 7,868 while the critical value in df 32 on 1%
is 2,738 on 5% is 2,036
Based on the result of this research above can be concluded that by using
silent reading technique in learning the reading comprehension give significant
effect on students’ reading comprehension. From the explanation above researcher
suggest to the teacher to use silent reading technique in teaching English
especially in reading comprehension because this technique is useful for the
students to improve their reading comprehension.
